It's vacation season...
Traveling and vacations often put us out of our comfort zones, and certainly out of our routines. Often we find ourselves around family, or other relationships that test our patience. We overindulge on treats of all kinds, and our sleep patterns are disturbed. And of course, we spend more money while on vacation compared to our day-to-day lives. Yet we are surprised when a vacation feels stressful, too quick, or lackluster.
Anticipation does not equate to good planning, nor excitement to mindfulness. Rather, intentionality is how we can build assurance that we will gather lasting memories, spend quality time with our loved ones, and become restored rather than depleted.
The quality of our attention shapes quality of our lives.
To escape the chaos and savor the important moments:
Balance the itinerary with plenty of down time, everyday, for everyone.
Start the day with a little exercise; even a bit of stretching will work miracles
Eat! Enjoy! Nothing like bringing that vacation home in your body.
Go analog: consider packing a sketchbook, camera, or journal and disconnect from your devices as much as possible.
Have an idea of what you want to spend overall and divide by number of days for a daily spend. When you go over, take it easy the next day. I've also found it’s a reality check for the kids.
